Artist’s Statment

Sola is a wonderful new eating establishment thriving on Bozeman’s south side.  Sola, the restaurant, was named in honor and celebration of the sun. My quilts have been shown since the early 1980’s in many prestigious places but never alone- solo.  To me the similarity of these two words (Sola and solo) is an interesting coincidence as this is the first solo showing of my work.

After working many years in the quilt industry, I began Quilting in the Country eighteen years ago.  Having met with instant success, in 1998 my shop was chosen as one of the Top Ten Quilt Shops in North America by American Patchwork and Quilting (Better Homes and Gardens.)  As the business continued to grow and thrive, I began creating more original designs and classes for quilters across the United States.    Over the years I’ve designed scores of original patterns and 100’s of quilts.  In addition to quilt designs and patterns, I’ve written books.  This includes Retreat with Quilting in the Country and 4 cookbooks- Soup’s On, Salad Sampler, Daily Desserts, and Cookies to Share.  Mostly recently, my book, Quilting in the Country, was published by Martingale (That Patchwork Place).   I was honored when the book went into a second printing.

Over the years, Quilting in the Country’s Outdoor Quilt show became a destination quilt show with over 500 quilts on display and more than 6,000 visitors from across the US and foreign countries visiting.  Even though the show was discontinued several years ago, the glorious tradition continues with an outdoor display of quilts created by participants at my quilting retreats.  In addition, we continue a wonderful tradition – A Day in the Country.  During this day, my husband Bill and I share our home (an original 1870’s homestead), the lovely gardens and creative surroundings with our guests who enjoy hands-on mini classes, demonstrations, and wonderful country food.

Quilting in the Country and my designs have been published in many quilting publications.  I’ve taught around the United States from Alaska to California and presented at the International Quilt Market.  Last year, my designs were featured in the Quilter Magazine, Irish Quilting, and QuiltMaker. I was also chosen as one of the Top 100 Designers in the US.  In early January 2010, my story of my Great Grandmother’s Blue and While Quilts and updates of their original designs from the early 1900s are featured in Quilter Magazine.

Nearly all the designs in my first solo show at Sola are my original designs.  In some cases, you will discover one design interrupted with different colors and fabric designs.  Nearly all the quilts were enhanced by the expert quilting of Bev Palm.

I have a passion for what I do.  I try to keep my soul alive by doing what I love, and I intend to express myself honestly though my quilts.  I realize we are all creative and influenced by our surroundings.  I have an intimate connection with the influences of my life experiences and my environment.  The loyalty and support of friends and family make a positive impact on by work and make it possible.

We all make choices about people, places, and things and that influences our work.  I continue trying new designs and colors combinations until something clicks.  One thing always leads to the next.  I take pleasure in what truly pleases me and then I move onto more creative discoveries and never forget to appreciate all the influences in my world. I feel blessed to live the life I do.

Thanks you for this first opportunity to go SOLO at SOLA!
