Befrienders mission is to enhance the quality of life by befriending our aging population. Our
goals within our mission are
Befrienders is an intergenerational, volunteer organization which brings university students and
community volunteers together with elderly homebound citizens in Gallatin County. Befrienders
was created in 1993 with the understanding that homebound seniors in our community often
have limited social interaction due to life transitions, physical limitations or other circumstances.
Befrienders recognizes that seniors still have much to offer this community and younger
generations; therefore, the program aims to provide opportunities for friendship and mentorship.
Matches meet weekly and participate in activities such as reminiscing, eating out, grocery
shopping, or going for coffee. Through these valuable relationships Befrienders not only
addresses the need for senior companionship, but does so in a way that respects and encourages
the wisdom and experience that senior citizens have to share.
These simple yet significant relationships have decreased the loneliness of the seniors and helped
them live independently longer. For both seniors and volunteers, participation in Befrienders has
helped stimulate more involvement with the community.
